Domestic Violence: An Artist’s Perspective — A Unique Exhibition Supporting Survivors

In collaboration with the Artworks Center for Contemporary Art, Alternatives to Violence hosted a special one-time art exhibition showcasing moving artwork and survivors’ stories. The event, titled Domestic Violence: An Artist’s Perspective, was held on July 7 and 8, and strived to provoke meaningful dialog though art on a critical topic that is often shrouded in silence.

For the exhibition, artists around the region were invited to create a piece of art to convey their message relating to domestic violence. By engaging the vibrant arts community, the exhibition created a safe space for reflection, dialogue, and learning. The call resulted in over 20 remarkable pieces – many of them borne from personal experiences. The artwork was available for purchase with a percent of the proceeds donated to Alternatives to Violence.

We are so grateful to the wonderful and generous artists who contributed their talent and time to the exhibition. Participating artists included Ellen Auchter, Chrysta Bairre, Cara Brewer, Manuel Cordero, Kodi Delaney, Bethany Economos, Charis Fleshner, Janna Flores, Angie GeeHan, Nancy Gilbert, Joclyn Goss, Hayley P, Elizabeth Suriani, Alexandra Swanty, Tania Valenzuela, Stephanie Wadman and Lydia Wolfe.

The show was both inspiring, thought-provoking and healing for many attendees who came as far as the Denver area to see the exhibition. Over 100 people attended the cocktail reception, where they had the opportunity to meet the artists. There were smiles and there were tears. (A private room was provided where anyone who may have felt triggered could take pause.)

This collaboration with Artworks for Contemporary Art not only allowed artists to display their work, but amplified the voices of survivors by shining a light on an important issue. The show also helped reinforce ATV’s mission of supporting survivors and fostering awareness throughout the community.

Thank you to everyone who attended the event and to the staff at Artworks for Contemporary Art for working so hard to make it happen!
