Children & Teens

A Community for All

Alternatives to Violence believes that anyone experiencing domestic violence, sexual assault or human trafficking deserves safety and support. We welcome anyone who comes to our door or calls our phone with compassion, acceptance and respect.

We work with several local partners to assist in the healing journey of our clients.

Joy & Justice

Joy & Justice provides experiences of joy for women and children recovering from domestic violence while providing education to key players in the justice system.

ChildSafe

We refer many of our clients to ChildSafe. ChildSafe coordinates services with law enforcement, child protection agencies, schools, medical professionals, and other mental health providers to ensure that children's rights and privacy are protected throughout each stage of the process.

Children

Children and adolescents who have witnessed or experienced abuse, family violence, or sexual assault may benefit from counseling services. ATV offers children and youth creative groups in the SafeHouse. We also provide the opportunity for children to engage with a trained dog for play and comfort. Additionally, ATV has community partners in Northern Colorado that provide access to professionals to help children identified as victims. Some of these resources offer services on a sliding scale or accept Medicaid.

Why is this important?

  • In homes where there is domestic violence, child abuse is 15 times more likely to occur than in non-violent homes.
  • Studies estimate that the number of children at risk for exposure to family violence is about 3.3 million.
  • Children who witness abuse to a parent display the same symptoms, including post traumatic stress, as children who are actually abused.
  • Children who are abused or witness abuse may exhibit behavioral and emotional disturbances that range from withdrawal, low self-esteem, nightmares, self-blame, aggression against peers and family members, and property destruction.
  • A history of family violence or abuse is the most significant difference between delinquent and non-delinquent youth.

Teens

Many think domestic violence only happens between adults, but it happens among teens too – and it happens often. According to loveisrespect.org, 1 in 3 U.S. teens will experience abuse from someone they're in a relationship with before they become adults. The abuse can be physical, sexual, verbal or emotional. It is often used to intimidate or control the other person in a dating relationship.
